The Black Antelopes continued the tournament tradition of the hosts making it at least to the quarter finals but their progress was marred by controversy after Mali claimed that both Angola and Algeria played out for a draw since the result would mean both the teams would progress at the expense of Mali.
Meanwhile Ghana avoided the embarrassment of getting eliminated from the group stages by snatching a narrow defeat over Burkina Faso in their final group game. A defeat in their opening group match meant that Milovan Rajevac’s side needed to beat Burkina in their final game and though Andre Ayew gave them a first half lead, Ghana struggled to stamp their authority on the game.
Rajevac expressed his relief at progressing to the next stage and said that his side performed well against a side determined to get a positive result. Michael Essien remains the only high profile absentee for Ghana with the Chelsea midfielder out of the tournament with a knee injury.
