The Eagles looked down and out after the hosts took a 4-0 lead with just 15 minutes remaining on the clock. Seydou Keita’s strike in the 79th minute was viewed as nothing but a consolation goal. However Mali refused to give up and scored three goals in the final four minutes of the game, including two in injury time, to grab a vital point.
The result sees them remain in contention for the next round and coach Stephen Keshi will be hoping that his side can cause another upset on Thursday and move within touching distance of progressing to the quarter finals.
Meanwhile Algeria coach Rabah Saadane will be expecting a vastly improved performance from his side after the Fennecs slumped to a shock 3-0 defeat to minnows Malawi. Saadane admitted that the best team won the game and is aware that anything less than three points against Mali on Thursday could seriously dampen their high spirits following qualification to the World Cup finals.
