Alex McLeish’s men played splendidly against last season’s runners up Liverpool, and might have even come away with a famous win had it not been for a controversial penalty earned by David Ngog. Blues midfielder Lee Carsley, who was adjudged to have brought Ngog down, accused the young French striker of cheating.
Blues had earlier come from behind to lead 2-1. Ngog gave Liverpool the lead, but Christian Benitez equalised from a set piece. Cameron Jerome then scored a truly outstanding long range goal to put Birmingham 2-1 ahead, but Steven Gerrard came to Liverpool’s rescue, tucking away the controversial penalty.
Like Birmingham, Fulham also drew their last Premier League. In front of a sparse crowd at the DW Stadium, Fulham fell behind in the 13th minute, but equalised shortly before half time through Clint Dempsey. Dempsey converted from the spot after Titus Bramble brought him down in the box. The Cottagers had keeper Mark Schwarzer to thank for some excellent saves.
