The winter break came at a bad time for the German giants who had finally snapped out of a poor start to the season by winning their last four games. Coach Louis van Gaal looks to have finally found out the winning formula and has taken Bayern from sixth place to third, just two points behind league leaders Leverkusen.

Meanwhile Hoffenheim coach Ralf Rangnick will be looking to avoid another mid-season collapse and build on their good start to the season by qualifying for the Europa League. Hoffenheim had emerged as surprise title challengers in the first half of last season but a drop in form meant that the club finished seventh in the league.
