West Ham has had a campaign none of the supporters have enjoyed - they were quickly disposed of in the League Cup, they are getting hammered (no pun intended) in the Premier League where they sit 17th. Only goal differential is keeping them out of the drop zone.
Arsenal are starting to find their feet and will continue putting tons of pressure on Manchester United and leaders Chelsea once they make up their fixtures that were moved earlier in the campaign. The Gunners are seven points off of Chelsea but have two games in hand.
The FA Cup offers a rare opportunity for these old London foes. In 1998, they met in the quarterfinals at Highbury. It ended 1-1. In the replay at Upton Park, penalties had to decide who moved onto the semi-finals: Arsenal won 4-3 and went on to win the competition. Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka had the 2nd and decisive goal in their 2-0 victory over Newcastle that day.
In 1989, it was a replay again. 2-2 at Upton Park before the Hammers ran out 1-0 winners at Highbury.
Earlier in 1980, West Ham ran out 1-0 winners at Upton Park while in 1975, it was 2-0 West Ham at Highbury.
If anything, this Cup tie should show that it should be a cagey and close affair at Upton Park this Sunday. Be sure to log on to watchfootballnow.com and use your premium membership to see West Ham host the Gunners.
