The Blaugrana capped a wonderful week by beating title rivals Madrid 2-0 at the Bernabeu. It also allowed them to move three points above Los Merengues in the league table and kept them on course to pick up their 20th Spanish league title. Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Barca against Madrid. The little Argentine collected playmaker Xavi’s pass and cut inside Raul Albiol before firing past Casillas for his 40th goal of the season.
Xavi also had a hand in Barca’s second goal, scored by young Pedro. Los Cules keeper Victor Valdes came under some pressure towards the end from Cristiano Ronaldo and co., but Barca held on to clinch an important win. Messi was also the architect of Barca’s victory at Estadio Riazor earlier this season, when they won 3-1 in December. Deportivo have been winless on the road in La Liga since beating Santander 1-0 in late November.
