Madrid’s last league game was against local rivals Atletico. They triumphed 3-2 in the derby, with Kaka, Gonzalo Higuain and Marcelo scoring. Los Merengues also beat Alcorcon 1-0 in the Spanish Cup, but were eliminated as they had lost the first leg by an embarrassing 4-0 score line. Star forward Cristiano Ronaldo is unlikely to feature against Santander because of his ankle problem.
Racing are fourth from bottom in the league, and have just picked up one point from their five games on the road. Their last and only league win came in September against Malaga, who are currently last in the league table. Racing’s last game saw them beat Salamanca in the Spanish Cup. Mohamed Tchite grabbed a brace, with Xisco also scoring.
