Striker Jermain Defoe returns from a three match ban, but playmaker Luka Modric and winger Aaron Lennon remain sidelined. Defender Sebastien Bassong will also miss this game after injuring his hamstring against Arsenal. The game against Sunderland will thus see Bassong not figuring in Spurs’ starting XI for the first time in the league this season.
Sunderland are three places below Spurs in the league table, but they can move above the Lilywhites if they triumph at White Hart Lane on Saturday. The Black Cats came from two goals behind to draw against West Ham in their last league game. Andy Reid and Kieran Richardson were the scorers for Steve Bruce’s side against the Hammers.
The Wearsiders will be without skipper Lorik Cana and striker Kenwyne Jones, both of whom are suspended. Cana picked up his fifth yellow of the season against West Ham, while Jones was sent off for pushing Herita Ilunga. Lee Cattermole and Bolo Zenden are injured, but this match will see Darren Bent square off against his old team mates. Fraizer Campbell will undergo a late fitness test to see whether he can feature against Spurs.
