Austria coach Dietmar Constantini has again chosen to overlook former captain Andreas Ivanschitz, despite the Mainz midfielder being in fine form for his club. Another absentee is Spartak Moscow defender Martin Stranzl, who announced his retirement following Constantini’s snub. There are two Premier League players in the Austrian squad- Wigan’s Paul Scharner, and Wolves’ Stefan Mairhofer.
Spain beat Diego Maradona’s Argentina 2-1 in a friendly at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday evening. Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso opened the scoring for La Furia Roja by slamming in the rebound from David Silva’s attempt, only for Lionel Messi to equalise from the spot for the Albicelestes. Alonso then grabbed a late winner for Spain, also from the spot, after Argentine defender Martin Demichelis had been penalised for handball. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas won his 100th cap for Spain against Argentina.
