Portugal, who were without injured captain Cristiano Ronaldo, beat Bosnia 1-0 in the first leg in Lisbon. Bruno Alves scored what was to be the winner in the 31st minute, assisted by Manchester United’s Nani.
Bosnia hit the woodwork on as many as three occasions, nearly making Carlos Queiroz’s Portugal pay for their wastefulness in front of goal. Ronaldo will also miss the second leg tie on Wednesday.
Bosnia would have liked the comfort of an away goal going into the second leg, but were unable to get it, and Miroslav Blazevic’s men will have to work on overcoming the one goal deficit on Wednesday evening. Skipper Emir Spahic, Elvir Rahimic and Samir Muratovic will miss the second leg after receiving bookings on Saturday.
