Africa’s final representative at the 2010 World Cup will be chosen this Wednesday when Algeria take on reigning continental champions Egypt in a one game playoff at the Al Merreikh Stadium in Omdurman. Use your membership to watch Algeria vs Egypt live online.
Algeria lead Egypt by three points going into the final round of qualifiers, but lost 2-0 in Cairo to leave the two teams tied in all the five criteria used by FIFA. Les Fennecs will be hoping to avoid the fate that befell them twenty years ago, when Egypt pipped them to a spot at the 1990 World Cup.
Egypt needed to win by three clear goals to qualify automatically, and by two goals to force a playoff. They took the lead in Cairo through an early Amr Zaki effort, but despite piling on pressure, they were unable to get that second goal, and with the clock ticking by, it seemed that the Desert Foxes would progress at their expense. However Emad Moteab sent the fans into delirium by conjuring a goal out of nowhere in the fifth minute of extra time.
Egypt and Algeria have already played each other twice this year, with both the teams picking up one win each. Who will win Round No.3 on Wednesday? Sign up today to watch live streaming of the playoff game between Algeria and Egypt online.
