Portugal finished second in Group A behind Denmark, and are without influential skipper Cristiano Ronaldo for this clash. The Real Madrid forward has not yet recovered from his ankle injury, and will also miss the return leg in Zenica.
Coach Carlos Queiroz will be hoping that the likes of Simao Sabrosa, Nani and Miguel Veloso will step up to the task in Ronaldo’s absence.
Nobody expected Bosnia to finish second in a group that also contained Spain, Turkey and Belgium, but the Dragons have rapidly improved since the appointment of Miro Blazevic as national coach in July 2008. They scored 25 goals in ten qualifying games, only three less than European champions Spain.
Bosnia will be relying on their Bundesliga trio of Edin Dzeko, Vedad Ibisevic and Zvjezdan Misimovic to terrorise the Portuguese backline. Dzeko and Misimovic together scored fourteen goals for Bosnia in qualifying.
